General FAQ
- What is ‘House As A System”?
With a HOUSE AS A SYSTEM (HAAS) assessment KMS looks at your entire home. If you change one aspect of your home it will affect how other parts function. For example, if you change your windows you may cause condensation or back drafts.
- Do I have to do all the recommended upgrades now?
No, a full HAAS assessment provide you with an overall picture of where your home require upgrading. Your KMS consultant then works with you on prioritizing what work to do first. Every home is different and our goal is to assist you on making the right choices for you and your comfort.
- I just need windows, why should I get a full assessment?
Most homeowners are very aware when they need to have their windows upgraded. What a full assessment provide you will is an overall picture of your home and it's energy concerns. KMS's goal is to provide you with as much information as possible about the status of your home and other areas where you can improve upon the energy efficiency and your overall comfort. Since there is no charge for this assessment, we require a little bit of your time to provide you with a lot of knowledge.
- How is KMS different from a Window Company?
We provide the homeowner with a complete House As A System upgrade. Where a window company focuses on only windows and/or doors. KMS goes beyond and will provide you with a home that is more comfortable and energy efficient by providing upgrades to not only windows and doors, but insulation, ventilation, combustion safety and draft proofing. We also can provide you with a solution to high heating/cooling bills.
- What is Window Wise?
Window Wise is a National Certification Program that independently certifies and audits the window, the installation, and the contractor, and unconditionally guarantees your window installation for 5 years.
- What is the 'R-value' rating on your windows?
Windows are not like walls and insulation and therefore the R-value is not true measure of the energy efficiency of a window.
Many consumers became aware of R-values – a measurement of a product’s resistance to heat loss –
and learned that materials (floors, walls, and roofs) with higher R-values are more energy efficient.
R-values are still used by many building materials, especially insulation.
Windows are very different from insulation in walls and ceilings. Windows let the light in and allow people to see out, and they interact with their environment in ways that insulation does not. They react to outside air temperatures, sunlight, and wind, as well as indoor air temperatures and occupant use. Windows are strongly affected by solar radiation and the airflow around them. R-value does not accurately reflect this interaction. Therefore, the window industry measures the energy efficiency of their products in terms of hermal transmission, or U-factor. U-factor measures the rate of heat transfer through a product. Therefore, the lower the U-factor, the lower the amount of heat loss, and the better a product is at insulating a building.
National Resources Canada and Energy Star Program have provide a rating system that test windows from different manufactures and provide a 'Energy Rating' on each window. The higher the Energy Rating the more energy efficient the product.
- When should I get an Energuide done?
An Energuide test is provide by a NRCan (National Resources Canada) licesed energy advisor and their is a fee for this service. To take advantage of the current Federal and BC grants, you must have a pre-test and a post-test done.
This test can be done at anytime prior to the start of any upgrades.
You can hovever, have a FREE assessment done with KMS and we can provide you with visual evaluation of your home, inform you of the government money available then you can decide if you require an Energuide test.
